- The Settlers - Demo Version
-
-
- Information:
-
- You have probably heard of the game "The Settlers".
- You may have read about it, or a friend may have
- mentioned it. The fact that the Amiga version of this
- game has scooped up all kinds of awards will not
- have escaped the notice of an attentive observer of
- the software market such as yourself. Now you have the
- opportunity to test the PC-version and form your own
- opinion. You can try out a range of functions to
- experience the fascination of "The Settlers".
-
- Please bear in mind that this is merely a demo version
- of the game. Many of the game functions (as, for example,
- support for the SVGA mode) have not been included, and
- game time is limited to one hour only. After this time,
- the program will automatically return to the main screen.
-
-
- Starting the game:
-
- The current demo version will only run in DOS. You should,
- therefore, enter DOS and change to the CD directory
- "\ENGLISH\DEMOS\SETTLERS".
-
- Simply enter "SETTLERS".
-
- Sound card users start the game with
- "sb" for Soundblaster,
- "sbp" for Soundblaster-Pro,
- "pas" for Pro-Audio-Spectrum or
- "algold" for Adlib Gold.
-
- The demo version assumes certain standard values for IRQ etc.
- In case of problems, you should start the demo version without
- sound.
-
-
- Controls:
-
- The whole game is controlled with the mouse. If there are two
- players, the second player will use the joystick.
-
- After loading, the title screen appears. One click will take you
- to the main menu. On the left center of the screen you can select
- the game type. Choose between 'demonstration' (if you wish to
- observe a game), one player or two player mode. Up to four players
- are shown in the lower half of the screen. The three bars next to
- their pictures represent initial stores (blue), intelligence (green)
- and birth rate (red).
-
- Click START on your left. The computer will generate the game world,
- and play commences. A segment of the game world appears on the monitor,
- and five symbols are shown at the bottom.
-
- We will now refer to game world segment as the "screen", the five symbols
- are the "menu". You will come across the term "special click"; this means
- that you do not only click the left mouse button, but you must hold
- down the right mouse button at the same time. Holding right and
- clicking left is the "special click".
-
- First you need to know how to move your view. Hold down the right mouse
- button and move the mouse in the direction you wish to view. For greater
- distances you should use the map. Click the map symbol in the menu at the
- bottom of the screen, and a game world map will appear. Simply click at
- any point on the map, and the screen will shift to this point.
-
- Your first move in the game is placing your palace or headquarters.
- Large buildings like the palace require fairly evenly lawned areas. It is
- not always easy to find a suitable site, and you may wish to use the
- appropriate help function:
-
- When you special click on the left menu symbol, all potential building
- sites on the screen are highlighted. Select a suitable site by clicking
- it on-screen, and click the new menu option "Build palace" (left).
- The palace will appear bit by bit. The palace is the only building
- you are given "for free"; all further buildings must be constructed
- by your settlers in the course of the game. The borders of your territory
- are shown as posts and buoys. You can construct your settlement within
- these borders.
-
- When building houses, first you have to select a suitable site on the
- screen (you may use the same help function as above for choosing the site)
- and click on the left symbol (Build). Several types of buildings will appear.
- Select the one you want. An arrow in the lower left hand corner means
- that additional pages are available. After you have chosen a building site,
- a foundation stone or cross for major buildings will appear to mark the site
- on the screen.
-
- Before you can start construction, you need to build an access road between
- the site and your castle. Roads always link two flags. Click on one of the
- flags on screen. This will call up the symbol "Build Road" on the menu. Select
- this symbol. New symbols required for road construction will now appear around
- the flag. A red and yellow striped symbol means that the road cannot be extended
- in this direction. The other symbols indicate the gradients of the territory,
- ranging from "very steep incline" to "very steep drop". The gradient is not
- overly important at first, and you may simply take these symbols to indicate
- that you can extend the road in these directions. Just click one of these
- symbols on the screen, and the road will be extended piece by piece in the
- desired direction. Continue the road until you have reached the other flag
- to connect your palace and the construction site.
-
- Now your settlers will start their work. A man will appear from the palace.
- He is in charge of transporting materials along the new road. A second man
- with a yellow helmet will make his way towards the construction site to start
- the building work, or a man with an orange helmet will prepare the site with
- a shovel.
-
- Wood and bricks are taken to the construction site from the palace. After some
- time, the building is finished, and a further man now leaves the palace to take
- up residence in the new building and start carrying out his profession. In the
- meantime, you can initiate other building and road projects. In order to expand
- your territory, you need to construct a guard post, tower or castle. As soon as
- one of these is finished and a knight has moved in, the boundary will be moved
- back so that you are given more space to build houses.
-
- The two boxes on the right of the menu provide access to a range of statistics
- and special set-up menus that require more detailed explanations than can be
- included in this short guide.
-
- We hope you have found these quick instructions both informative and useful for
- the construction of your first settlement, although we only had enough space
- to mention the very basics.
